Moderation and balance are over-rated. Excess can provide useful learning experiences by enabling us to push our own boundaries and those of others. If we were all, always, moderate and balanced, the world would be a very dull place.

In terms of perceived dullness, I like the idea that 'straight-edgers' test the boundaries of those high-livin' rebellious types.
In terms of the point that you make, I guess it's not the same as 'people grow up at different paces and ages'.
