Politics / Music / Internet

This week’s preponderances:-

POLITICS: This question comes from my hearing commentators speak of the Liberal Democrat leader - Nick Clegg’s - efforts to avoid sounding like a Conservative during his main party conference speech.

What, if anything, do you feel there to be missing from the mainstream political landscape (as you perceive that)?

MUSIC: Next, a question borne of the Last of the Summer Wine theme tune:

Is there a musical instrument that sings for you, in ways that other instruments (played well) just don’t quite manage?

INTERNET: The next question emerges from my Facebooking the fact that for practical reasons I’m going to have to join one of those social networking sites.

Have you landed on any websites recently that have really drawn you in – more so than do most newly landed-upon websites?

More frippery next week.

I think the main thing missing from the political lanscape (as is often the way) is choice. Parties all try and fight over the centre ground for votes - radical ideas will get you the votes of the minorities, but that won't win you an election.

I also think (and the Lib Dems touched on this) that there should be an option which cuts taxes and lets people decide what to do with their own money.

Let me give you an example: Labour announced a raft of plans designed to help people become more enegry efficient. A package of measures where they'd helop pay for loft insulation, that sort of thing.

What's wrong with just cutting people's tax burden by that amount, and letting people decide themselves what they want to do with that money?

Anyway.

I love the sound of a piano - particular in a pop/rock record. Nothing better than the likes of Sigur Ros or Keane in relaxed, melancholy piano mode.

I have rediscovered my love of the newly-back-online Scrabulous of late. I've also discovered Setanta Sports' Dutch football news page which I have to say I am liking an awful lot also.

lb - Your example of too much political interference, as in the case of energy efficiency and taxation, makes me wonder about the percentage of policy decisions that assume a lack of concern for social responsibility on the part of the everyman.
hoss - Your advice led to a good trip to youtube. Ta.
huw - That is useful, thank you. I have submitted a sentence, though I read that only around 10% of submissions are ever publically shared. Also, in content terms, it's really very close to postsecret.
